Fine Art
Oil painting is by far my most favorite medium to work in. You can leave your work for hours and the painting is still wet and workable, or you can use a fast-drying linsead oil for a quicker dry time. Besides drawings, oils were my first works. This painting is the only original oil painting from the series done in charcoal from the orginal photograph and digital seres. This painting was done on canvases that were originally used as background art for the “The Eyes Have It” photo exhibit in 2005
The styles of the paintings are mostly what I do these days, whether if it’s a pastel or oil paintings, the brush strokes must have movement. I call it a combination of my two favorite artists, Monet and Van Gogh with a little bit of Salvador Dali.
Jamaica Dreams
Medium: Oil 2001
Description: This is part of the “My Blue World” collection as well as a series of paintings done from photographs taken in Jamaica.
“My Blue World” which takes its name from a song title from a band in the 70s/80s called Electric Light Orchestra, is not specifically a style of painting but a color chosen as part of a method of painting that dates back to the Renaissance. If you look at many paintings by artists such as Leonardo Da Vinci, or Raphael, the basis of the colors are dark brown over a brighter base color like yellow. The technique involves first painting the canvas a lighter color, letting that dry, covering it over with a darker color, then before the darker color dries, removing it in the areas you want the light to shine through. After my first few oil paintings “A Day In The Park” or “The Dead Tree” I decided I really wasn’t a big fan of the color brown. So I did the same thing with blue. Yes, I’m sure Freud would have something to say about this being a reflection of my mood during the times I painted these, but the truth is, I just love the colour blue!
